COMMISSIONING ARTWORK

A commissioned work of art is one that has been created for a specific client, space or requirement. A successful commission depends on clear, detailed, and candid communication among artist, consultant, and client.

The artist requires as much information as possible about the environment in which the piece is to be displayed: location and physical features around it-windows and doors, lighting, construction style and materials, dimensions of walls and furniture, palette and tone of finishes. Important also is information on uses of the space, such as time of day it is used and by whom.

Artists appreciate the opportunity to visit the site if possible. Swatches are essential-- paint chips and samples of fabric, wall coverings, upholstery and carpeting.

A preliminary meeting of the artist; consultant, and client establishes the content of the artist's first presentation. Usually within two or three weeks, the artist will present a number of concepts in the form of drawings, small studies, or models. Accompanying these tangible illustrations are proposals that describe each option:  finished size, materials, medium, colors, estimated pricing, and a statement of how it solves the requirements of the project.
COMMISSIONING ARTWORK A commissioned work of art is one that has been created for a specific client, space or requirement. A successful commission depends on clear, detailed, and candid communication among artist, consultant, and client.

Some artists require a design fee in advance to accommodate the time and expense incurred creating first presentation materials. This fee is non-refundable, but is deducted from the price of a finished commission.

Commissioned work
At this point the artist changes, refines, or elaborates on concepts per direction of the client and the consultant, and another meeting takes place to review final plans.

Once a design is approved, 50% of the total is required to initiate order entry. Time required to complete a commissioned piece varies, and is usually established as the project develops.

When the work is finished, it is presented to the client for approval. The balance is due upon installation.

Each artist approaches a commission differently, but this describes a typical procedure. We have had very positive results with every commission executed by the artists we work with. The reasons are simple: straightforward communication, thorough discussion, and no guesswork!
